School Programs and Community Outreach

Looking for a program for your classroom, speaker for your event, or exhibitor for your festival or conference? Atlanta Audubon Society is eager to participate in your community and spread the word about birds. Please review the options below and contact our Director of Education, Melanie Furr, at 678.973.2437 or melanie@atlantaaudubon.org to schedule your request.

School Programs

AAS staff or volunteers will come to your school to present a Learning About Birds program--indoors or outdoors. Our programs are aligned with many Georgia Performance Standards in science and other disciplines, and our fun, hands-on activities build on science concepts for students. We are happy to work with you to present a topic that works well with your curriculum or simply to take the students out bird watching, providing binoculars for them to use. Some of our most popular programs include Common Birds of Atlanta, What Makes a Bird a Bird, and Mysteries of Migration.

Our Learning About Birds programs are listed below. We can help you decide which will be a good fit for your students and tailor programs to meet your needs.

  • Ten Common Birds of Atlanta
  • What Makes a Bird...a Bird?
  • Exploring Bird Habitat
  • Nature Journaling
  • Feeding Birds
  • Mysteries of Migration
  • Getting Started with a Field Guide/Bird Checklists
  • All About Owls
  • Grassland Birds and Their Habitat
  • Birds and Their Environment
  • Groups of Birds
  • Bird Songs and Calls
  • Bird Body Systems

Our educational outreach programs are offered for a minimal charge of $40.00 per hour. Title I schools and other high needs organizations may qualify for discounted or free programs. A mileage fee for travel to and from programs is charged at $0.50/mile.

Speaking Engagements

Atlanta Audubon Society volunteers will come to your organization's facility or meeting location to give a presentation on many bird-related topics, including Common Birds of Atlanta and our popular Wildlife Sanctuary Certification Program. Although this is a free service of Atlanta Audubon, a donation of $50 or more is encouraged to support our education, conservation, and advocacy efforts, and we hope that your participants will consider becoming members of our organization.

Festival and Conference Exhibits

Atlanta Audubon is happy to set up a display at festivals and conferences. Please send an email to melanie@atlantaaudubon.org if you would like Atlanta Audubon to set up a booth at a festival or conference.
