Volunteers

One way to promote the Atlanta Audubon mission is for members to VOLUNTEER!

As you know, the work of Atlanta Audubon Society is run almost exclusively by volunteers. We currently have some very important volunteer opportunities that need to be filled. Please take a look and let us know if you are interested in volunteering for these very important programs! We need you!

To volunteer, send an email with your name, phone number, and area of interest to Volunteers or to the contact person listed with some of our activities. An AAS member will contact you with details of ongoing opportunities or when we need your help for specific events. Join us in making a difference!

Volunteer Opportunities

3 More Volunteers Needed for Morning or Afternoon Shifts at International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD)!
If you are in town on Saturday, May 10, 2008, you are especially invited to join AAS, the Piedmont Park Conservancy and the National Wildlife Federation for BIRDS IN THE PARK!:

  • Help visitors try on basic binoculars (our AAS sets we use with kids), and pass out easy-to-understand literature on all you need to know before buying a pair.
  • Work a shift: Morning shift (8:30 am set-up; 9:00 - 12:00pm, staff the booth); or Afternoon shift (12:00 pm to 12:30 Take over from am person; 12:30 – 3, staff the booth; 3-3:30 break down the booth, with help!

These are very easy and fun tasks. If you enjoy using your own binoculars, you can help others do same!

Still Needed for Saturday, May 10, 2008 International Migratory Bird Day at Piedmont Park!
For our ALL ABOUT BINOCULARS STATION, we need:

  • 2 volunteers to guide visitors in handling binoculars (we'll have some Audubon binocs), and understanding the numbers (we have a great handout explaining all these)
  • 2 volunteers to bring her/his spotting scope and show people how it works, let them try it out (on a stuffed bird in a tree?)

You can choose your shift: 8:30am - 12:30pm or 12 noon - 3:30pm. Or, you can choose a shorter period within those shifts. Email Sue Sturges at sturgess@nwf.org or Marge Igyarto at igyar@earthlink.net with questions and to sign up!

MEET YOUR BACK YARD BIRDS is an IMBD station that needs afternoon volunteers for the 12 - 3:30pm shift. Help visitors play interactive games (they are all assembled) to teach the common birds of Atlanta. You will have another volunteer with you!

12th Annual Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center Outdoor Festival And J.A.K.E.S. Day, Mansfield, GA, Saturday, May 17, 2008 We need a volunteer to set up our AAS display table and break it down at the end of the afternoon, as well as volunteers for shifts from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12 PM to 2 PM. Contact Nancy Hamilton, nlhamilton@bellsouth.net if you are interested.

Geltner Property Clean Up Day: July 12, 8am-1pm Join us at Atlanta Audubon Society's Wildlife Sanctuary in Douglas County.

Did you know that the Atlanta Audubon Society has a 183 acre conservation easement in Douglas County? This property was donated to AAS by Geraldine Geltner in 1997 and has beautiful hardwoods, wetlands, and a lovely lake. It is critical green space in a county that has grown tremendously over the years.

We need your help to remove deer stands and clean up trash on the property. We will meet at the Visitor Center at Sweetwater Creek State Park at 8am on Saturday, July 12, and carpool over to the Geltner Property. Note: There is a $3 parking fee at the park. After the clean up, we will have a picnic at the park.

Directions to Sweetwater Creek State Park: Take I-20 west from Atlanta, exit #44 at Thornton Road, turn left and go 1/4 mile. Turn right on Blairs Bridge Road, go 2 miles and turn left on Mount Vernon Road.

To register for the clean up by phone, leave a message at the AAS office, (770) 913-0511, with your name, email address, contact number, and the number in your party who will attend. Or you can register by sending an email to Sally Davis, salaw19@comcast.net.

This is a great opportunity to get involved and conserve unique green space in metro Atlanta.

The Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary Program is looking for volunteers to work 3 hour shifts on Saturday September 6th, 2008, during the Wildlife Sanctuary Tour. We are also looking for help with the certification of properties year round. This commitment is about 2 to 10 hours per annum depending on where you live! Anyone not living in the metro area is particularly desirable to us because we often have people applying for certification who live in the outlying areas around Atlanta. So, do you have anyone who meets that criterion for us? If so, contact Jacqueline McRae at jacqueline.mcrae@comcast.net

Sundry Occasional Tasks
We periodically need volunteer help in such routine – but essential -- tasks as folding, stuffing, sealing, and peel & stick. Usually, we get together in a small group when the need arises. For more information contact Sally Davis at salaw19@comcast.net
