DeKalb County Nature Preserve Volunteer Clean-Up Day

March 29, 2008 9am until 1pm

Constitution Lakes, inside I-285 just off Moreland Avenue in southeast Atlanta, is a former industrial site that is now home to a wide variety of wildlife. The area was used as a brickyard in the 19th and early 20th centuries until the brickyard was abandoned, and the site became unused and overgrown. The excavation of clay left deep pits that are now filled with water and home to various waterfowl; the surrounding forested area has many mature trees and an active bird population. The site was purchased by DeKalb County in 2003, and a parking lot and walkway down to the lakes was installed; a boardwalk on one side of the lakes is scheduled to begin construction by the end of April, with a formal opening of the nature preserve after that.

Friends of Constitution Lakes has been formed to work with DeKalb County to promote and maintain the preserve. Our first effort is a clean up of the walkway down to the lakes and along the lake shore on March 29th, 2008 from 9 am to 1 pm. This is a great opportunity to visit and help protect an intown birding habitat. For more information, please email Joy Carter at joy.carter@mindspring.com.
